We're currently scoping out flights to San Fran so we can try out this barre class with a twist. Informed Technique's classes take the traditional small-moves-that-hurt-so-good formula and add spring resistance on both the arms and legs to kick things up even another notch. The studio requires a $60 30-minute introductory session before you're allowed to advance to other classes.

A barre fusion method that's taught in an industrial-chic space, Informed Technique was designed around a custom-built spring suspension system. All movements are taken from classical ballet and performed on the overhead suspension system for resistance and alignment feedback or on reformers. Tucking your wrists or ankles into pulley loops feels pretty intuitive though the resistance makes reps harder than you'd think. Classes are limited to five students. Single class, $35; 10-class pack, $250

Add grace and poise to your workout at Informed Body, the studio of Pilates instructor Jill Harris, with a novel strength-conditioning regime. Harris, a trained jazz and hip-hop dancer, designed a custom-built suspension system that works with springs and resistance (and a little gravity) to help you get toned without bulking up. She collaborated with San Francisco Ballet soloist Dana Genshaft to develop specific exercise routines, and Jeffrey Van Sciver of Alonzo King LINES Ballet is a devotee of the new regimen.
